The compositions of the weld deposits are precisely controlled to obtain the desired optimum microstructures to render the desired properties for the recommended welding applications. Wear resistance needs to be improved whenever a component is exposed to wear due to high or low stress abrasion, cold or hot abrasion, metal-to-metal or metal-to-earth abrasion, impact, corrosion, thermal fatigue, compressive loading or a combination of any of these. Mostly, more than one wear mechanisms act causing the component to wear. Wear resistance can be increased by overlaying the component either by welding or thermal spraying. The microstructure of the deposit must ensure that maximum resistance is offered to the wear which takes place due to particular combination of the mechanisms causing wear to the component. The selection of an appropriate build-up and overlay alloys and the welding procedure therefore play an important role in combating component wear and maximizing performance. The procedures for rebuilding and hardfacing components vary greatly depending on applications and service conditions. A particular alloy and method of application may work effectively in one area but may produce mediocre results elsewhere. A reduced component wear can be achieved by well-planned maintenance program which will increase production and saving in cost per ton of aggregate production obtained.
